Learn More About the Chakras: The 6th Chakra

March 4, 2013

This is part 6 in a series of 7 articles relating to the subtle energy body known as the Chakras. For the previous five articles, please see: Chakra 1, Chakra 2, Chakra 3, Chakra 4, and Chakra 5.

The Sixth Chakra is also named Ajna, which translates from Sanskrit as to perceive, and to command. It is also known as the 3rd Eye Chakra and is the “gateway to wisdom”. It governs the pineal gland, memories, personal effectiveness, eyes and eyesight, and concentration.

Through this center is where intuition, dreams, and visions are related. The 3rd Eye can see beyond this dimension into other realms and dimensions of energy and spirit lie. Exercising and opening this Chakra will help bring about a clarity of our existence and how we relate to this realm, as well as our relationship to energy and other dimensions. Through this Chakra we can begin to shed the illusion of this world and gain understanding of the truth to what is.

The 3rd Eye Chakra is also a Chakra that can help us manifest things we want into our lives. It is here that we carry our beliefs and ideas about ourselves and the world around us. For instance, if we carry a negative idea and belief about others, they will certainly show up just as we expected, and our experience with people will be born of that negativity, and can create a cycle of belief as we reaffirm to ourselves our beliefs. Likewise, if you hold a positive idea and belief of others, they will show up as you held them to. It is the same about ourselves. If we continually hold a negative picture about our abilities, we are likely to create that negative outcome. This is the place to re-program our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, about others, and about the world, and hold that as our focus, so that we can create a truly blissful experience for our lives.

Our past memories and experiences reside in this Chakra, and if negative past experiences are left unhealed, can affect us in our present. Intuition, dreams, symbols, and insights center here. Our true sight is here; not our ability to look, but our ability to see; our ability to understand.

You may have an imbalance in your 6th Chakra if you:

  • Have hallucinations
  • Are delusional
  • Obsessive
  • Have a lack of imagination and creativity
  • Have an inability or a difficulty seeing alternative options
  • Have difficulty visualizing
  • Are insensitive
  • Cannot concentrate
  • Have persistent headaches
  • Have health problems relating to your pineal gland
  • Experience sleep disturbances
  • Have nightmares
  • Have Alzheimer’s or dementia
  • Have imbalances in serotonin and/or melatonin levels

As with any issue relating to your body and mind, I strongly recommend that you work with your general healthcare practitioner. Do not stop doing what your physician has prescribed you unless you discuss it with them first and they agree that is an okay or safe thing to do.

Reiki, Yoga, and Meditation are wonderful additions to any healthcare routines, and I highly recommend using any or all of them in partnership with your regular health regimen.

You may have excessive energy in your 6th Chakra if you:

  • Have hallucinations or delusions
  • Are obsessive
  • Have difficulty concentrating
  • Fantasize excessively or so much that it impedes your abilities in your day to day life
  • Have nightmares
  • Have unwelcome and/or intrusive memories
  • Have headaches
  • Have vision problems that are inconsistent with age

You may have deficient energy in your 6th Chakra if you:

  • Have difficulty visualizing
  • Have little to no imagination
  • Have difficulty seeing alternative solutions and options
  • Live in continual or habitual denial
  • Are a staunch skeptic
  • Are closed to possibility
  • Are insensitive
  • Have headaches
  • Have vision problems that are inconsistent with age

For physical issues, like headaches and vision problems, something to ask yourself deeply is if there is something you have been pushing away, that you don’t want to accept or see. If you are in denial about something that is absolutely something you cannot change, it can create disharmony and imbalance in your 6th Chakra, and therefore, can manifest as other problems. Illusions and denial inhibit our ability to see clearly on that higher level of seeing. Both illusion and denial are born of maya, Sanskrit for pretense or deceit; literally ‘ma’ meaning ‘not’, and ‘ya’ meaning ‘that’; thus, maya = not that. It is also the topical reality that hides deeper truth; our projection of reality rather than the truth of that reality.

A balanced 6th Chakra could have:

  • Good intuition
  • Deeper insights
  • Creativity and Imagination
  • Good dream recall
  • The ability to visualize (see in your mind)
  • Good memory
  • Good focus
  • Good vision
  • Feelings of happiness & satisfaction
