In today’s society, just about everything costs money, and quite often, it costs a lot. Sometimes, the cost for what we need is obscene. Greed is a major factor in our society, and I think it’s not helping us to be better human beings. I think it’s a detriment to our growth, our true happiness, and even to our health.
I believe it is both my priviledge and my reponsibility to be in service to my fellow humans. But why should being in service cost so much to the people I’m serving? It shouldn’t.
Granted, as a business, I have fees, I have costs, and I also need to contribute to the support of my family, and so I also have a responsibility to charge for my services. But does that mean I have to ask for your arm, your leg, and your first born? It certainly does NOT.
This has been on my mind for quite a while. I often get calls from people who just can’t afford to pay for my services, and although I would do my best to work with them, sometimes, I don’t think I did good enough; it weighed heavily on me.
So I’ve decided to make a full blown sliding scale. If a person who comes to me for service can afford it, then I ask them to pay it. But if they can’t, I am committed to being of service no matter what. No matter what is a bold statement, because that means that if a person can’t pay anything, I’m committed to still being in service to them. And you know what? I’m not blinking an eye. It actually makes me happy to be making this choice.
When I was talking about doing this, some people asked, “Why would you give away your services when you can charge for them?”
And my answer was, “Why not?”
Honestly, why wouldn’t I help the people who can’t pay as much or at all? The friends who knew me best, knew that this is who I am. The compassionate, giving, loving person they knew couldn’t reconcile turning away business to those who could benefit from it. If it means I’m giving some of my services away, then it means I’m giving some of my services away.
It is my fondest hope that other business owners will join me in this stand for humanity. It’s me living in love, in compassion, in kindness, in fairness, in balance, and in truth to my fellow humans.
